Where is our data processed?
The business question Where is our data processed? visualizes a data flow diagram that describes how selected data is generated, transformed, transmitted and used across applications over time. Upstream and downstream applications are mapped with directional arrows. By visualizing CRUD (Create, Read, Update, and Delete) operations alongside information flow details such as connection frequency, data format, and transferred business data, the data lineage report makes complex flows easy to understand.
Users can easily trace where business data is used, spot overlaps or inconsistencies, and uncover opportunities for optimization. Assess the business data at any point in time to ensure transparency and control across the enterprise. Understand the data flows across applications and the vital operations they perform to support the business.
Note that if the Basic Data Management use case is activated, the business question will showcase a selected business object that is transferred by information flows. If the Advanced Data Management use case is activated, the business question will focus on a selected business data transferred by information flows.
The business question Where is our data processed? is available with the base package IT Transformation Server - Enterprise. The use case Information Portfolio Governance must be activated.
Use the method that is most convenient for you:
- In the left navigation panel, enter Where is our data processed? in the Search Navigation field.
- In the left navigation panel, click Home. In the content area, go to the Business Questions page and click the tile for Where is our data processed?
- In the left navigation panel, expand the sections Business Questions and Risk and click Where is our data processed?
The Data Flows view is an information flow diagram that shows the information flows transferring a selected business data.
- Click the
local filter button and specify the Business Data or Business Object field. The Business Object field is displayed if the Basic Data Management use case is activated, and the Business Data field is displayed if the Advanced Data Management use case is activated. - Information flows are displayed that transfer the selected business data or business object. All incoming and outgoing applications specified for the information flows are visualized.
- Black information flows are flows where the selected business data/business object is transferred. Grey information flows indicate that the selected business data/business object is not transferred.
- The CRUD operation is displayed on the applications. An application might Create ( C ), Read ( R ), Update ( U ), or Delete ( D) the data.
If you have the relevant access permissions, you can edit the information flows in this business question.
- To edit a single information flow or application, click the element to open the editable object inspection pane. Double-click the information flow or application to open its content area.
- To open a data workbench to edit all information flows, click the
edit button > Edit Information Flows. Use the features of the data workbench to slice-and-dice your data to focus on data and do the analyses you are interested in.
Information flows must be in the repository and well-documented. The following data is required in order to have meaningful results:
- Information flow > Transferred business data/business object.
Go to the Data Quality page. The Data Completeness view indicates the data that is recommended for meaningful results to the business question. Scroll to the Pending Issues view to resolve the issues and to ensure that the data is complete. Only the first 5000 issues are displayed.
Go to the Data Source page to review the data that is used to answer the business question. The data source is a list report and cannot be edited.
