Which features should be prioritized?

Go to the business question How do we manage our program flow? > Program Backlog.

Review the features in the Analyzing and Backlog columns. Features are sorted in the order of the weighted shortest job first. Compare with the story points representing the estimated job size in order to understand the duration of the feature. Drag-and-drop a feature to move it forward in the delivery pipeline.

The Program Backlog serves as a holding area for upcoming business and enabler features that aim to build and evolve a comprehensive set of solutions. It provides a structured way to visualize and manage the flow of these features—from ideation through analysis, implementation, and completion.

This view shows features including their statuses and scores for Weighted Shortest Job First (WSJF). Move features into the analyzing phase based on their WSJF score. Weighted Shortest Job First (WSJF) is a prioritization method used to sequence work for maximum economic value. The WSJF is calculated by dividing the relative cost of delay by the relative job duration.

To prioritize the features based on those that deliver the most value in the shortest amount of time:

  1. Show the features with the status Funnel and Reviewing in the Status column.
  2. Review the features that have the highest WSJF score. The higher the WSJF value, the greater is the benefit relative to the time required to implement the feature. Moving forward on a feature with a high WSJF value ensures that the high-value epics that can be completed quickly are prioritized first, maximizing efficiency and business impact.
  3. Change an feature's status to Analyzing to prioritize the feature.
