Define a data workbench

Data workbenches are the main workspace for editing multiple objects directly in a tabular view. Next to editing capabilities, data workbenches provide visualization capabilities.

When you define a data workbench, you define which objects are displayed in the data workbench. You do not define which object class properties are available and editable in the data workbench. The availablility and editability of object class properties is exclusively managed via the unified access permissions in the class model. Click here for a description about how to manage editability for object classes and object class properties.

Users can define at runtime which object class properties, indicators, and roles shall be included in the data workbench they are working with. This configuration is stored for the user only. As an administative user, you can store the data table of the data workbench that you have defined as default for all users. This is done directly on the Alfabet user interface.

Data workbenches can show a simple table or an expandable dataset with multiple levels of related objects. The expandable datasets are in the following called hierarchical data workbenches.

In simple data workbenches, users can create their own reports from the data in a data workbench. In addition, you can provide additional reports via the configuration of the data workbench. These reports are then available to all users. For hierarchical data workbenches these features are not yet available.

The definition of a data workbench can include the following:

Create a data workbench for a single object class or a hierarchical data workbench.

The data workbench configuration defines:

  • whether all objects or a subset of object of a specific object class be available in the data workbench.
  • whether the data workbench shall provide editing of objects or shall be view only and provide reporting capability only

Add configured reports to data workbenches

This configuration is optional and only available for simple data workbenches. Users can create own reports from the data in the data workbench on demand. In addition to this reporting capabilities you can create configured reports and add them to the data workbench to provide advanced reporting capabilities.

Define editability and availability of object class properties and button interactions.

This configuration is optional. The editability and general availability of individual object class properties in a data workbench cannot be defined separately but is identical to the overall availability and editability of the object class properties for the user interface. The access permissions are defined in the class model and the class settings for the object class.

Add the data workbench to the user interface.

Add the data workbench as a menu item to the navigation or to content areas.

Define a default layout for all users.

As an administrative user, you can define which object class properties are visible in which order in a data workbench when a user first opens the data workbench.
