Capture strategic themes
In the navigation panel, click Investment Architecture > Strategy Network > Strategic Themes. Per default, the data workbench displays only a set of basic attributes. You can add more columns to capture other attributes directly in the data workbench or you can navigate to a strategic theme's content area and define it in more detail there. Go to Investment Architecture > Strategy Network > Strategic Themes data workbench.

Add a new strategic theme. Click
> Create Strategic Theme to open the edit panel and specify the basic data. -
Define the details of the strategic theme.. Click the Navigate
button next to a strategic theme to open its content area. Specify the goal's attributes as well as the relationships that it has to other assets in the repository.
Try to capture as much information as possible about the strategic theme because complete data considerably improves the results of business questions and other analytics.
Once a strategic theme is in the repository, you can define more details about it in the Strategic Themes data workbench . Or specify and analyze the strategic theme in detail in its content area . In the data workbench, click the Navigate button for a strategic theme to open its content area > Overview page. All mandatory fields must be defined to create the strategic theme and save it.

Define the strategic theme's basic data. All mandatory fields must be defined to create the strategic theme and save it.
- Name: (Mandatory) Enter a unique name for the strategic theme. The name should help others easily understand the purpose of the strategic theme.
- Object State: Specify whether the strategic theme is in planning or active in the enterprise.
- Responsible Organization: Specify the organization that is responsible for the strategic theme.
- Authorized Access tab: The user who creates the strategic theme is the authorized user per default. This can be changed. Select one or more authorized user groups that shall have write permissions to the strategic theme. All users in the authorized user group can edit the strategic theme.
A role represents a functional responsibility that a user or organization has for the strategic theme. Assigning users and organizations to roles is critical to understanding responsibility for assets in the IT and is required to answer the business question Who is responsible for our assets?.
Responsibilities are based on preconfigured role types. Your company may also configure custom role types via the Portfolio Admin user profile. Depending on the role type, a specified user and/or a specified organization may fulfill the responsibility for the strategic theme. A user assigned responsibility via a role has read-only permissions to the strategic theme. To change data about the strategic theme, they must also be specified as an authorized user or member of an authorized user group.
Roles can be assigned to a strategic theme in the Strategic Themes data workbench or the goal content area via Overview > Responsibilities. A person can have one of the following roles or a custom role added by your company:
- Business Owner: A person or organization who owns the strategic theme and is responsible for managing the functional requirements.
- Stakeholder: A person or organization who has an interest in the strategic theme and therefore requires read-only access permissions.
To specify responsibilities for the strategic theme:
- Click in the relevant role field to open the selector.
- Expand the ORGANIZATION or USER sections in the selector and select the person or organization fulfilling the role.
- Click OK to save the role definition and close the selector.
The assets that are impacted by a strategic theme make up its architectural scope. You can specify any application, business capability, business process, component, information flow, organization, or project that is impacted by the strategic theme. Be sure to identify which business capabilities are impacted by a strategic theme, where are business processes affected, and how are applications that provide IT support to the business influenced?
- Go to the strategic theme's content area > Architecture Scope > Affected Architecture.
- In the matrix, select the class column to add an asset to the architectural scope of the strategic theme and click New > Add Existing Architecture Element. For example, click the column Business Capability to add business capabilities impacted by the strategic theme.
- Select one or more assets and click OK to add them to the matrix.
- To document the planned changes to one or more architecture elements assigned to the strategic theme's scope, click the

Edit. Provide a comment about the strategic theme and set the Change Category to describe the how the asset will be changed by the strategic theme: - New: The asset will be introduced in the scope of the strategic theme.
- Updating: The asset will be significantly updated in the scope of the strategic theme.
- Changing: The asset will be changed to some degree in the scope of the strategic theme.
- Retiring: The asset will be retired in the scope of the strategic theme.
The assets that are impacted by a strategic theme make up its architectural scope. Review an affected architecture report to view all strategic themes in the strategy network and understand their affected architecture elements. You can also add specify any application, business capability, business process, component, location, vendor, or organization as architecture that is impacted by a strategic theme.
- Go to the Strategic Themes data workbench and double-click the workbench caption to drill-down to it.
- Click Visualize > Strategic Theme Analysis > Affected Architecture. The matrix report shows all architecture elements assigned to the strategic theme structured according to asset type.
- Select the cell below a class header to add an asset to the architectural scope of the strategic theme and click New > Add Existing Architecture Element.
- Select one or more assets and click OK.
- To document the planned changes to one or more architecture elements assigned to the strategic theme's scope, click the

Edit. Provide a comment about the change.
- Go to the strategic theme's content area > Architecture Scope > Affected Architecture.
- Select the cell below the header Projects click New > Add Existing Architecture Element.
- Select one or more projects and click OK.
- Click the

Edit. Provide a comment about the strategic theme. The Change Category is not relevant in this case and can be ignored.
The target and actual achievement of a strategic theme can be assessed. The rated and target values are based on measure types that are typically configured by an administrative user. Measure types consist of a name that describes the measure and a unit that shall be measured. For example, a measure type "Improve engagement from 30% to 60%" may be assessed as a %, whereas a measure type "Increase Net Promoter Score from 35 to 60" may be assessed as a number.
The measure types can be assessed for the strategic theme in the Performance Measures view
To add measure types:
- Go to the content area of a strategic theme > Overview > Objectives and Key Results.
- Click the
plus sign button > Create New Measure Type Category and specify a name for the category. You can create a hierarchy of measure type categories. - To configure measure types to add to a measure type category, select a measure type category and click the
plus sign button > Create New Measure Type. Specify the following: - Name: A descriptive name of the measure type that users will understand.
- Unit of Measure: Enter a relevant unit of measure that is applicable for the measure type. (For example, T€, hours, %, etc.)
- Description: Enter a meaningful description that will clarify the purpose of the measure type.
- Category: Select the measure type category that the measure type is assigned to.
- Indicator Time Series: In the Search for field specify either Time Series Period to select one time series period or Time Series Group to select a time series group bundling a set of time series periods.
The target and actual achievement of a strategic theme can be assessed over time in the Performance Measures view. The rated measure expresses the actual value whereas the target value expresses the expected value. The rated value defined for a measure type can be edited as long as the time series period is active.
- Go to the content area of a strategic theme > Overview > Performance Measures.
- Click the caption of the view to drill down to the view.
- Click the edit button to rate the strategic theme for the permissible time periods.
- To assess the target value for the measure type, enter a value in the Target column.
- to assess the actual value for the measure type, enter a value in the Rated column.
