Configuring time series to track target values
Time series evaluations allow users to define and track the evolution of target values for specified indicator types for assets over time. This capability enables the user community to define and track the evolution of target values for specified indicator types for a specific object over time. In order to implement time series evaluations, you must configure time series groups (optional), time series periods, and time series evaluation types. Time series groups bundles time series periods which could be specified as Q1 2026, Q1 2026, Q1 2026, Q1 2026, etc. or any other time period you choose. Time series evaluation types are evaluation types that have been configured and made available for a class in the Time Series Evaluation Types view.
Time series evaluations are used to assess and analyze the maturity of business capabilities over time. The Time Series Evaluation view is available in the content area of each business capability and allows users to capture the current as-is and desired to-be state of a business capability for relevant time series periods. This is available to users with the license Enterprise Architecture Management.
Time series are also used together with measure types to evaluation the achievement of strategic themes. This is available to users with the license Strategic Portfolio Management.
- Go to Configuration > Reference Data > Time Series > Time Series Period Group to create times series groups that allow you to bundles a set of time series. The name of the time series group should help users identify the time series periods in the group.
- Go to Configuration > Reference Data > Time Series > Time Series Period Management to create time series periods. Each time series period should represent one specific event or period for which target values or measures should be defined. A time series period could be, for example, 2020-01 or Q1/2020. You can create as many time series periods as required. Time series periods must be activated to be displayed in the user interface. Specify the following
- Time Series Period Name: Enter a unique name for the time series period. It is recommended that the name indicate the time unit (for example, Q1) that is relevant to your enterprise and that users will understand.
- Date: Select a target date to indicate when the evaluation should be executed. The target date assigned to the time series period determines its sequence in the series of active time series periods displayed in the Time Series Evaluation Page View. Please note that the target date is not displayed in the Time Series Evaluation Page View and no control mechanism is associated with the target date.
- Is Active for Evaluation: Select the checkbox to activate the time series period. Target indicators can be defined by the user community if the time series period is active. Users with relevant access permissions can define an object’s target indicators for the relevant time series period in the Time Series Evaluation view in the asset's content area. If the time series period is inactive, the time series period will not be displayed in the Time Series Evaluation view and thus indicators cannot be defined for the period.
- Description: Enter a meaningful description about the time series period.
- Time Series Group: Select the times series group that the time series period is assigned to. The time series group bundles a set of time series periods and is relevant for implementation in the Strategy Network capability.
- Once you have created the time series periods, specify the evaluation types and their indicator types that are relevant for the time series and assign them to the object classes for which target evaluations are to be defined. To do so, go to Configuration > Class Configuration. Select the relevant object class in the explorer and go to the Time Series Evaluation to add the evaluation types as time series evaluation types. For each time series period that is currently active, users will be able to specify target values for the indicator types associated with the time series evaluation types in the Time Series Evaluation view in the asset's content area.
- Note that a solution designer with access to Alfabet Expandmust configure the content area to include the Time Series Evaluation (ObjectTimeSeriesEvaluation) view so that users can assess the assets.
