What are our service overlaps?

The business question What are our service overlaps? helps you to quickly identify the overlap of business services and support services due to common IT assets. Review the services impacted by an IT asset and establish clear objectives for service delivery in order to minimize risk and reduce the number of service collisions.

The license package Enterprise Architecture Management is required to work with this business question.

Use the method that is most convenient for you:

  • In the left navigation panel, enter What are our service overlaps? in the Search Navigation field.
  • In the left navigation panel, click Home. In the content area, go to the Business Questions page and click the tile for What are our service overlaps?
  • In the left navigation panel, expand the sections Business Questions and Rationalization and click What are our service overlaps?

A filter setting is mandatory for this business question. Click the Filter local filter button and click in the Service field. In the selector, select either Business Service or Support Service in the Search for field. Enter search criteria to find the service you want compare other services to.

Here's how to interpret the information:

  • The lanes indicate the object class of the service items that provide the services. The lanes will depend on whether you have selected a business service or support service in the Service field.
    • Business services are provided by applications, deployments, and support services.
    • Support services are provided by components and physical and virtual servers.
  • IT assets showing a ServiceOverlap symbol indicate that the IT asset is affected by the service selected in the Service field.
  • IT assets with number symbols indicate that the IT asset is affected by one of the services selected in the Overlapping Services field. Click Show Legend to understand the numbers added to the IT assets.
  • An IT asset highlighted red is affected by multiple services and requires attention. To understand more about the service overlaps, click the IT asset in the matrix and click the Navigate navigate button to open the content area. Go to the Service Context page to understand services impacting the IT asset.
  1. Click the service item and click the Navigate navigate button to open its content area.
  2. Edit the data about the service item as needed.
  3. Go to the Service Context page to understand all services impacting the asset.

Use the features of the data workbench to slice-and-dice your data to focus on data and do the analyses you are interested in:

  • Click Structure and add or remove columns to the data table. Include relevant attributes and indicators to capture important data. A tooltip explains the purpose of each attribute, indicator, and role that you can add.
  • Click Visualize to view the data in a different graphic visualization. You can save these visualizations to your content repository and used them in other content area pages.

  1. Go to the business question What are our service overlaps? and click the  Edit edit button > Edit Services.
  2. In the service items matrix that opens, the service selected in the Service and Overlapping Services fields are displayed on the Y-axis. Add a service item to provide a service by clicking in the cell for the relevant class and service. Click the  New plus sign button > Add Existing Architecture Element and select the IT asset to add as a service item that provides the service.

Business services and support services must be in the repository and well-documented. The following data is required for this business question:

  • Organization consuming the business service or support service

Go to the Data Quality page and resolve the issues to ensure that the data is complete.

Go to the Data Source page to review the business services and support services that are used to answer the business question. The data source is a list report and cannot be edited.
