What is our application landscape?

- In the left navigation panel, enter What is our application landscape? in the Search Navigation field.
- In the left navigation panel, click Home. In the content area, go to the Business Questions page and click the tile for What is our application landscape?
- In the left navigation panel, expand the sections Business Questions and Roadmapping and click What is our application landscape?
The business question What is our application landscape? provides a snapshot of the application landscape and the business capabilities they support. The visualization allows you to understand the current and planned application support to the business over time. Analyze the current and planned application landscape based on different indicators to identify potential risks to your IT portfolio roadmap as well as rationalization opportunities for your business.
This business question visualizes data in a nested matrix report. The visualization shows the first-level and second-level business capabilities in the business capability model. The matrix visualizes the application support that is specified for each second-level business capability. You can enhance the report by adding indicators or color rules to include additional layers of information. The business capabilities that are subordinate to the second-level business capabilities are not displayed in the report but are included in the data source and are aggregated up to the second-level business capability.
Which applications currently provide support to the business? Click the Filter button and select Active in the Object State filter to understand which applications currently support the business capabilities. In the Color Rule field, select Business Relevance to understand which business capabilities are most critical for the business.
How will the IT landscape change over time for the most important business capabilities? Click the Filter button and enter the current date in the Active Date field to understand the current and planned support that applications provide to your company's business capabilities. Change the date to a date in the future to understand the future support of the business. Recommendation: Look for applications that will be obsolete in the future to understand where risks will occur to critical business capabilities due to potential gaps in application support.
What is the technical obsolescence of a business capability? Click the Filter button and select Technical Obsolescence in the Color Rule field to highlight the risks to the business capability based on technical obsolescence. Identify which business capability are at risk due to applications that use a component that has reached the end of its planned lifecycle.
To understand the components that an application uses, double-click an application to open the content area. Go to the Technology Portfolio page and open the Component Lifecycles view. Review the components that have an end date before the application's end date and consider whether the components shall be updated or whether the unsupported application should be replaced by a different application.
Where can I potentially consolidate the IT landscape? Look for business capabilities that have a significant number of applications supporting them.
Review each business capability to find applications that provide similar functionality that may be redundant.
Double-click an application to open its content area. Go to the Business Portfolio page and scroll to the Similar Applications Supporting Business Capabilities view . The view shows business capabilities that are supported by the application you are working with as well as other applications. This helps you to find redundancy in application support so that you can consider which applications might be sundowned.
The Common Business Capabilities column shows the business capabilities the selected application has in common with other applications. The percentage of overlap is calculated and shown in the Overlap % column. You can sort the dataset based on the values in the Overlap % column. The Provided by Source Only and Provided by Target Only columns show other business capabilities that are also supported.
